What is PSA and why does grading matter?
PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the world's largest and most trusted third-party provider for authenticating, grading and encapsulating trading cards and memorabilia. Since its founding in 1991, PSA has set industry standards recognized by collectors, dealers and auction houses worldwide. PSA's grading process carefully assesses a card for authenticity, condition and rarity. Centering, corners, surface and edges are evaluated to assign a numerical grade from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint). The grade is then sealed with the card in a tamper-evident, transparent case (slab).
Grading matters for collectors in several ways. First, it provides an objective condition assessment and a universal language for a card's condition, which is crucial because even small flaws can strongly affect value. Second, PSA guarantees authenticity, an indispensable protection in a market threatened by counterfeits. Third, grading helps preserve and increase value: cards with a high PSA grade usually sell for much more than ungraded cards. The "PSA Pop Report", a public database of all graded cards, shows how rare certain grades are. Finally, the slab physically protects the card from damage. PSA grades a wide range of trading cards, including Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece, Lorcana and many other TCGs, as well as sports cards.
What PSA Germany's opening means for the European market
The opening of PSA Germany in Frankfurt was a paradigm shift for the entire European trading card market. Until then, European collectors had to send their valuable cards across the Atlantic to PSA in the USA or go through intermediaries. That meant high shipping costs, long waits, complex customs formalities and the risk of international transport. The new facility in Germany removes most of these hurdles.
Collectors can now send their cards directly to a facility within the EU, which drastically shortens routes and simplifies logistics. This is likely to increase grading activity as the barrier to submitting falls. More graded cards in circulation increase market liquidity and allow more precise pricing. With Frankfurt, PSA chose a central transport hub in a country with one of Europe's largest trading card communities.
Benefits for collectors: shorter routes and faster processing
- Lower shipping costs: instead of expensive insured shipping to the USA, only national or intra-EU rates apply. That makes grading worthwhile even for mid-value cards.
- Shorter processing times: no transatlantic transport and no customs clearance.
- No customs within the EU: no import VAT or duties on the return from the USA.
- Lower transport risk: shorter routes mean less risk of loss or damage.
- Billing in euros: no exchange-rate risk against the US dollar.
The table below shows the difference for a hypothetical submission of 10 cards (indicative values, not official PSA prices):
| Aspect | Shipping to the USA | PSA Frankfurt |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping costs (round trip) | approx. €100-200 (international) | approx. €10-30 (national/EU) |
| Customs | Complex, with fees/taxes | None within the EU |
| Currency risk | Yes (EUR/USD) | No (EUR) |
| Transport risk | Higher (long route) | Lower (short route) |

Impact on the TCG market
Iconic cards in particular benefit from easier grading. Two examples whose value depends heavily on the grade:
- Charizard, Base Set 1st Edition (
4/102): one of the most valuable Pokémon cards ever. A PSA 10 sells for six-figure prices, and lower grades remain very valuable too. - Dark Magician, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon 1st Edition (
LOB-005): a symbol of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s early days. In PSA 10 it sells for many times the price of ungraded copies. More on Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Newer TCGs such as One Piece and Lorcana benefit as well: their collectors now have a local grading option, which strengthens confidence in authenticity and condition.
How to submit to PSA Germany: a guide
1. Preparing your cards
- Condition check: examine each card critically for scratches, dents, creases, fading or centering issues. Be realistic, PSA applies very strict standards.
- Cleaning: gently clean the surface with a microfiber cloth. Avoid cleaning agents and pressure.
- Protection: put each card in a soft sleeve and then in a semi-rigid card saver. Toploaders are less suitable, as cards can be damaged when taken out.
2. Online submission to PSA
- Create an account: if you haven't already, create an account on the PSA website.
- Choose a service level: the right level depends on the card's estimated value and the turnaround you want. Current prices are on the PSA website.
- Enter your cards: game (e.g. Pokémon), set (e.g. Base Set), card number (e.g.
4/102), card name (e.g. Charizard) and estimated value. The value determines the service level and insurance amount. - Print the form: after entering your cards, the system generates a submission form. Print it out.
3. Packing for shipment
- Sorting: arrange the cards in the order of the form.
- Bundling: fix the cards between two pieces of cardboard and put the form on top.
- Protective box: use a sturdy, well-padded shipping box.
- Double box (recommended): for valuable shipments, use the "box-in-box" method.
4. Shipping to PSA Germany
- Carrier: ship with tracking and sufficient insurance.
- Address: use the address PSA gives you during the online submission.
- Tracking: keep the tracking number and follow the status.
Once received, grading begins. You get status updates through your online account, and your cards are returned insured. This makes grading cards from One Piece or Lorcana more accessible than ever.

PSA's Frankfurt facility is a decisive step for the European trading card market: more graded cards, more transparency and fairer prices.
